Thank you for visiting my blog. I give this word as freely as the Lord has given it to me. It's all about Jesus.

The Names of God

Names of God

As you read and study the scriptures you will find several different names that the bible uses to refer to God or the Godhead.  The Godhead is made up of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.  When you read scripture and come across the word God, it comes from the Hebrew word Elohim.  Elohim is a plural word that means the Godhead.  So when you come across the word God, it is talking about the Father, Son & Holy Spirit, all three together.

As you study scripture and see the word “God” with a capital “G”, then you know the scripture is referring to the triune God.

What is the difference between LORD and Lord?

When the word LORD comes up as a name for God in Genesis chapter 2, then it gets a little confusing.  In my unscholarly opinion, this is how I break it down:

LORD:  Stands for the Hebrew (YHWH) or (Yahweh) as we know it in English.  It’s a singular word that I believe describes God the Son in his deity or God the Son in his roll as part of the triune Godhead.

Lord:  Stands for the Hebrew (Adonai).  It’s also a singular word that describes God the Son as his earthly presents, or as our Master.

lord:  Does not apply to any part of the Godhead, but to a human master over his own servants.

When we read about Moses and the burning bush, I believe this is God the Son speaking to Moses on behalf of the Godhead.  When we read about the Lord, I believe this is God the Son speaking to us in his humanity, or as a master to his servants.

This is just my interpretation of the word LORD or Lord as used in the bible.  I am no scholar by any means, so you may want to do a more comprehensive study on this.

Another name used is I AM, it means to exist, to be or to come to pass.  In Revelations the term is used:  I AM the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.  The name Jehovah and I AM can be used synonomously.

There is also the term: “the angel of the Lord.”  This term also is used for Jehovah or God the Son.  There are several names the Hebrews used with Jehovah.  The most popular are:

Jehovah–Jireh:  Means the Lord our Provider, or I AM your Provider.  Can be found in Genesis 22:14. Whenever you have a need, call on Jehovah Jireh your provider.

Jehovah-Nissi: Means the Lord our Banner, or I AM your Banner.  Can be found in Exodus 17:15.  The Lord will fight your battles for you.  Your responsibility is to forgive and let Jehovah Nissi deal with your enemies.

Jehovah-Racha:  Means the Lord our Healer, or I AM your Healer.  Can be found in Exodus 15:26. We always have the right to call on Jehovah Racha our healer.  We know not the will of God. Nor do we know the beginning from the ending.  The I AM has defeated death and hell, and even if our healing doesn’t show up in this old earthly body of ours, it will in our new Heavenly one.  Never get discouraged when loved ones (in Christ) do not get healed, and end up at Heaven’s gate. Our natural hearts mourn, but our spiritual being knows we shall surely be with them again for Eternity, because of our faith in the cross. This one was hard for me. I wanted God to heal everyone I prayed over. Jehovah Racha did heal me once, in a revival in Shawnee, Oklahoma back in the ‘70’s.  I was diagnosed with arthritis and hurt everywhere and couldn’t sleep at night. I don’t even remember the evangelist name, but when he laid his hand on my forehead I was completely healed.  But I’ve lost family members to cancer, strokes, heart attaches, diabetes, and wanted healing for them all.  When we prayed for my father-in-law with cancer and told he only had a few months, Jehovah Racha gave him four more wonderful years, and during those four years he gave his heart to our Lord Jesus Christ.  So never give up the faith.

Jehovah-Shalom: Means the Lord our Peace, or I AM your Peace.  Can be found in Judges 6:24.  Take heart and do not get discouraged when things around you are unsettling. Jehovah Shalom with give you a peace that surpasses all understanding, even in times of trouble. In Romans 5: 1-5 Paul tell us that our tribulations will lead to patience, and patience will lead to experience, and experience will lead to hope.  And hope makes us not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is in us.

Jehovah-Tsidkeenu: Means the Lord our Righteousness, or I AM your Righteousness.  Can be found in Jeremiah 23:6.  The Bible tells us that the faith of Abraham was accounted unto him as righteousness.  God takes us as we are, when we show faith in Jesus Christ.  Jehovah Tsidkeenu becomes our righteousness so we can go boldly into the throne of God and make our request known unto him through prayer. Never be ashamed to get down on your knees and raise your eyes toward heaven.  Christ tells us to do this prayer in private.  I like to pray with my wife, but we both spend time just one on one with God.

Jehovah-Shammah: Means the Lord is Present, or I AM your Presence.  Can be found in Ezekiel 48:35.  When you give yourself over to God in faith, you put to death your old self and live your life now through faith in Christ.  The Holy Spirit dwells in you and your body becomes the temple of the Holy Spirit. If you have the Holy Spirit dwelling in you, the Jehovah Shammah will always be present.

Jehovah-Rohi: Means the Lord is my Shepherd, or I AM your Shepherd.  Can be found in Psalms 23:1.  Don’t ever think that you have no one looking out for you. Jehovah Rohi is your shepherd, and a good shepherd will leave the 99 sheep and go find the 1 that is lost.  Christ says I will never leave you nor forsake you.
